Engadget.com - A Visual Breakdown

14 05 2006

The last time I was reading an article on Engadget.com (a blog I was enjoying a lot in its early days), I was shocked by the amount of advertising on it. A whole bunch of Google Ad packs, and next to that there’s the overload of Weblogs Inc. promotional material.
So I made this scheme, to visually compare the use of space:

The red part is the actual article, orange are the comments, yellow the navigation.
Black are paid ads, and gray is property of Weblogs Inc. (Click for full view)

People often come across a web hosting service only when a business opportunity requires them to do so. That is when they first hear of domain registration and other aspects of hosting. A novice may get confused between a cheap web hosting and one promising the cheapest domain name. Hence such decisions should only be made after consulting internet marketing gurus. Neophytes often tend to pick a photoshop design for their site and consider things finished there.

errm…. at least its interesting and provides information? Can some competition of this blog now do a visual breakdown of it? Good, now I can waste more of my time. KThxBai.

Use RSS. You get nothing but the article and a tiny ad at the bottom. Also, it is delivered right to your computer. Good stuff.

would have been more accurate if you had chosen an article with no commments.

mr step (02:59:17) :

I think people are over reacting here - by the looks of it appart from the bottom of the page - anywhere you’re looking, the majority of the screen is unbroken content.

I think that’s a very reasonable mix of content and adds - i barely even notice ads i they don’t intrude into the content.

hmm… seems pretty much in keep with this blog page:

1. one small article on top,
2. a bunch a google advertising
3. and a bunch of self promotional links down the side!

yup! exactly the same! ;)

Vouksh (03:50:53) :

@ianubis: Ummm, $1000+? I’d love to see where you get these figures. The most expensive thing you can get is a dedicated server, which usually costs around maybe $100+ a month. But a site like that can easily run on shared hosting, which usually runs around $10/month for a decent package.

GG.

15 05 2006
NJ (04:26:52) :

Hmmm looks like most of the site is navigation and content… I’m a little confused what the issue is here. People need to make a living and advertising is one way to do it. I am always confused why people think every thing should be free.

erin orchard (05:39:02) :

there are a ton of websites/blogs like this and it’s just plain annoying. i have often joked that a lot of websites nowadays are more advertisements than content. look at any of the big sites - ivillage.com, bhg.com (betterhomesandgardens), etc. and there’s very little content there. i don’t mind a few google ads, but most websites now are more distracting than inviting. barf.

15 05 2006
HolyJaw (05:39:53) :

Just because Engadget has a lot of advertising space doesn’t mean it’s bad or anything? Seriously, you all say it’s shit just becuase it looks overpoweringly ad-y, but the truth is, it delivers content mostly unbiased that’s reliable and has, more or less, remained so. I find it great that they make money off of a popular site; that helps pay for bandwidth, web space, and more article writers.

15 05 2006
Yong Hwee (05:41:23) :

I don’t think havung too many ads is bad but they should reduce it if possible. Anyhow, their articles are pretty decent..

15 05 2006
John (05:42:05) :

that’s how they pay for the server farm.
Vouksh know much about hosting? $10 hosting?
Heard of overselling?
engaget can’t run on shared hosting, or a crappy $100 box with all the traffic they get.

You get what you pay for

15 05 2006
Jeff (06:01:39) :

I really don’t see the problem here at all. The ads are pretty unobtrusive, all text-based, and their RSS is ad-free.

John Lucifer (08:24:58) :

This is ridiculous. Engadget articles never take up much room, so of course there is going to be a huge amount of space for ads. Notice how much of the space is delegated to the article/comments/navigation, not just how small the article is compared to everything else…

15 05 2006
Paul-Serge (08:29:44) :

I didn’t say I hate Engadget, I said I’m shocked by the amount of advertising. That’s all. I know it’s quality content, and I keep reading it. But it would be so much better if they bundled the advertising or dumped some of it.

The choice of coloring for ads vs. Weblogs Inc. is poor in this diagram. They’re both dark shades of gray, making it look like there’s more advertising than there really is.

If anything, the giant, uninterrupted block of orange, shows how community orientated the site is, by having a lot of comments.

15 05 2006
Paul-Serge (16:27:14) :

@Joost Schuur: I din’t choose the colors ad random. I took black for the Google ads, and gray for Weblogs Inc. ads, because they’re still ads, but it’s more acceptable. So I choose a lighter gray to accentuate this. The parts of Engadget itself, navigation, post and comments, are shades between yellow and red.

Grokodile (17:21:51) :

Ah, the age old problem of how much commercialization is appropriate.

It’s not an easy question to answer. If it doesn’t stop you from reading… and doesn’t spawn popups, popunders and other crap, why not.

However, I do like it when the ads are segregated such that I can choose to view them or not.

nex (23:02:35) :

the ads aren’t so bad. they’re text-based and you can read the article before they’ve loaded, i.e. they don’t have some bad layout/markup that prevents the actual content from displaying as the ads load, or causes it to jump around. but the amount of space the weblogs inc. stuff takes up is indeed ridiculous.

l0k1 (23:28:36) :

Platypus is an extension that helps you “write” a Greasemonkey script to strip out the stuff you don’t want on a web page. I use it to strip out everything on Engadget other than the article and the comments and it works great (otherwise I’d have a hard time stomaching the site).

advertising.

2) Read their RSS Feed.

For people who visit the site for the first time:

1) It’s unclear which f***king RSS Feed they should use.
2) They won’t want an RSS from such a sh***y page, full of bs ads.

So go cry. Everybody cares how a web page looks.
