The Photoshop logo throughout the years - Which one is the best?

20 09 2007

As I wrote earlier, Photoshop has got a new logo. The critics aren’t really good, and I’m not a big fan either.
Personally I prefered the CS2 logo, but let’s take a look at the other old logo’s:

Photoshop 1:

ps1.jpg

Black and white. The eye is already there. Not quite stylish, but remember we’re talking 1987 here …

Photoshop 3:

pc3.jpg

They kept the eye, but showed of their skills in this one.

Photoshop 4:

ps4.jpg

Even more Photoshop wizardry.

Photoshop 5:

ps5.jpg

There’s the lens/magnifier.

Photoshop 6:

ps6.jpg
Photoshop 7:

ps7.jpg

The lens/magnifier makes his comback.

Photoshop CS:

For the Creative Suite, they introduced the feather for Photoshop, and other nature elements for the other tools.

Photoshop CS2:

Photoshop CS3:

cs3.jpg

Clean, minimal. Subtle gradient, already quite ‘2.0′ style.

Photoshop CS3 - E.T. edition:

Made by the Apple Geeks.
It’s funny to see that they went with the “eye” from version 1 to 7, then abandoned it completely for the Creative Suite, but still used some colors, and then opted for a minimal ‘clean’ look for the CS3. If you ask me, they’re trying to hard to follow every design trend. The new logo looks like a small Web 2.0 startup who’s trying to look big, hip and trendy. Adobe should go for a consistent, timeless design, and maybe tweak it a little for each new version, but not making 360 degrees every few month. What is your favourite?

Having certification like N10-003 on your credit surely changes a lot. You might not have to attempt a 70-270 or a 640-802 but that does not imply that you are exempted from exams like 642-432 and 640-863. These and more like 350-001 as well as 156-215 become mandatory, in order to grasp the correct concept.

its funny to see the great product like photoshop never had equivalently great logo. I think still, CS/CS2 logos were very elegant and as u said clean, but now thy have really lost it.

The best to me : CS2!

i’m gonna have to say i like the CS3 version the most, 2nd place goes to CS2… and i think the only reason for that, is that the CS3 version is simpler, and seemingly more “efficient” in some way which i think matches CS3, as its much, and i mean MUCH faster than CS2 (15 second launch compared to 90 seconds on my now obsolete powerbook)… hence i think the CS3 logo fits the best… but as for pure style, i’d probably vote for the CS2 logo… lol

the best for me is the minimal cs3 logo (and the color system of all adobe cs3 logo)
I agree this new logo is very web 2.0 and i think it’s the badest adobe done. much refer to an messanger service than to a photo manipulation app.

360 degrees = consistent.

Logo Design » Blog Archive » Adobe goes all Web 2.0-ey (17:05:01) :

[…] The Photoshop logo on a product, service, or technology, represents the rich legacy, technical quality, and attention to detail that has made Photoshop the gold standard in digital imaging. The message of this new image is baffling people. It’s not that the logo’s meaning isn’t blatantly obvious. It’s a textbook web 2.0 speech bubble, abstractly a letter ‘P’. The question is what does that have to do with Photoshop’s brand and products? This logo fails to reinforce the brand’s quality and position. It’s a departure from the Photoshop logos of the past; which were never that consistent, anyway. The eye was the most recognizable image of the brand. Sticking with that would have made a seamless continuation. Perhaps the new logo is meant to be an interpretation of the eye, but it’s not made clear. Negative responses to the change are prevalent. It’s generally perceived as a speech bubble meshed with the letter P. The mark has been compared to such things as: the PBS Logo, a widget, a startup web 2.0 company trying to look big,ET’s head, something from the aqua iMac era, and the Microsoft Silverlight Logo. I like the CS 1 or CS2 version… but what they should have done is added the eye into the feather and kept the eye as the static piece for each logo.

I’ve used Photoshop since version 2.5, and have to say that I _loved_ how the new designs were evolutionary steps up to version 7. I disliked version 6’s design, because it actually looked more Illustrator-related, vector-arty. The change to CS/CS2, I didn’t understand. Maybe they thought this step was needed, it definitely wasn’t. Ever since: Nopee. I mean: Sure I can live with the new design. Doesn’t get in the way. But it’s lost a lot of class in my opinion.

Reminds me of the 9/05 Quark logo (http://www.creativepro.com/story/news/24059.html), only uglier.

CS/CS2 were the best.

I didn’t like the CS3 logo when I first saw it. However it works very well on a Vista computer except for the file icons. The application icons work very well.
