Typography for Headers.

12 06 2006

Today I bumped on the Smiley Cat website, where Christian Watson has a showcase of header typography for weblogs. You imediatly feel the influence of the so called Web 2.0 design trends, like big fonts and the use of Trebuchet MS, but there’s a lot more to discover. And if you’re at the site, make sure to check the other showcase, one of comments design.

Engadget.com - A Visual Breakdown

14 05 2006

The last time I was reading an article on Engadget.com (a blog I was enjoying a lot in its early days), I was shocked by the amount of advertising on it. A whole bunch of Google Ad packs, and next to that there’s the overload of Weblogs Inc. promotional material.
So I made this scheme, to visually compare the use of space:

The red part is the actual article, orange are the comments, yellow the navigation.
Black are paid ads, and gray is property of Weblogs Inc. (Click for full view)

People often come across a web hosting service only when a business opportunity requires them to do so. That is when they first hear of domain registration and other aspects of hosting. A novice may get confused between a cheap web hosting and one promising the cheapest domain name. Hence such decisions should only be made after consulting internet marketing gurus. Neophytes often tend to pick a photoshop design for their site and consider things finished there.
